How to get to Kailash in Lhasa

Tibet's Ngari area is located at the peak of the roof of the world, with an average altitude of more than 4,500 meters, which is the largest on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, so it is also known as the roof of the roof of the world. It was at this high altitude that the sacred mountain Kailash and the holy lake of Manasarovar Lake were created. Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bonism have different beliefs and different deities, but they all regard Kailash as a sacred mountain, which gives Kailash the divine sanctity of multiple religions. Even ordinary tourists are attracted by this mysterious power and want to get closer to Kailash to see what her charms really are.

Where are Kailash and Manasarovar Lake in the wrong place?

Mount Kailash is located in Pulan County, Ngari Prefecture, Tibet, at an altitude of 6,638 meters, about 1,300 kilometers from the city of Lhasa and about 250 kilometers from the Shiquan River, the capital of Ngari. Kailash is located on the north side of National Route 219, and the starting point of Kailash Turn, Tachin is only 3 km from National Highway 219. Therefore, it is more convenient to see Kailash Peak, and the car can reach it directly.

The holy lake of Manasarovar Lake is located south of Kailash and separated by National Highway 219. Located south of National Highway 219, the closest distance between the national highway and the lake is only about 3 kilometers, it is a must-pass place for tourists to travel to Ngari.

On the west side of Manasarovar Lake is the famous ghost lake - Laonco, the two lakes are closer together and the scenery is similar, Manasarovar Lake is a freshwater lake, and Laonco is a saltwater lake. On the south side of Lake Manasarovar Lake is the highest peak of the Himalayas in Ngari, Namunani Peak, 7694 meters above sea level, opposite the sacred mountain Kailash across the mountain of Manasarovar Lake. It is called "Goddess Peak" by Tibetans, and you can see Namunani Peak from a walk on the 219 aisle.

How far are Kailash and Manasarovar Lake from Lhasa?

Every year, thousands of tourists from all over the world flock to Lhasa, Tibet, to begin their pilgrimage to the snowy holy land. Some of them came for Mount Everest, some for the mysterious Tibetan Buddhism, and some for the sacred mountain and holy lake. They will choose to arrive in Lhasa first, acclimatize to Lhasa at an altitude of 3,600 meters, and then travel to higher altitudes.

Kailash and Manasarovar Lake are located on either side of National Highway 219, about 1,300 kilometers from downtown Lhasa. There is a road connection between the two places, although the distance is long, but the transportation is relatively convenient, whether it is the elderly or children, can easily reach it.

What are the transportation options from Lhasa to Kailash and how many days does it take? Lhasa is separated from the sacred mountain and holy lake by 1,300 kilometers, which is a long distance, but Tibet is now more easily accessible and can be reached in many ways.

The first, train + road

Take the Tangzhu Ancient Road train of the Rari Railway from Lhasa to Shigatse, it takes 2.5 hours. After arriving in Shigatse, and then from Shigatse to Kailash by chartered bus of National Highway 318 + National Highway 219, the whole land route is about 1000 kilometers.

This is a little faster than the full road, but you will miss many of Tibet's classic tourist destinations, such as Yangdroyongcuo and Karora Glacier. In order for you to have no regrets during your trip to Tibet, we recommend at least one-way all-overland travel, and on the way back, you can choose to take the train from Shigatse back to Lhasa to save time.

The second, airplane + highway

The flight from Lhasa Gonggar Airport to Ngari Kunsha Airport takes 2.5 hours. Then charter a car from Ngari Airport along National Highway 219 to Kailash for about 200 kilometers.

Flying is the fastest way to get to Kailash by plane, but rising from Lhasa at 3,600 meters above sea level to Ngari Airport at 4,270 meters above sea level within two hours makes the average tourist prone to altitude sickness, so we generally don't plan our trips that way. If you travel to high altitudes such as Ngari multiple times, you can choose this option.

The third is the whole road

From Lhasa, the chartered bus travels the whole way along the New Tibet Highway to Kailash and covers a total of about 1,300 kilometers by land.

Chartered to Tibet Ngari is the best solution provided by travel agencies for tourists visiting Tibet, don't feel that this driving will be more delayed, in Tibet with an average altitude of 4,000 meters, you will only want all the movements to be slower, a little slower. In this way, altitude sickness is not easy to find you, so that you can have a more pleasant mood to enjoy the beauty of Tibet and feel the magnificence of the sacred mountain and holy lake.

Elevation change of the Lhasa-Shigatse-Ngari highway

As can be seen from the figure, from Lhasa to Shigatse, the altitude is relatively undulating, with high and low. However, after Shigatse, the altitude rises, but the altitude fluctuations are small, and the road is maintained at an altitude of about 4500 meters.
