Tibet Travel Permit and Flight Travel

A Tibet Travel Permit (Tibet Entry Permit) is the MUST-DOCUMENT to take a flight to Tibet. It is firstly needed to book flight from the airport or ticket agent. When you check in and check out the airports, the original Tibet Travel Permit also will be checked. (Note: if you take flight to Lhasa from Kathmandu, you only have to have the scanned copy of Tibet Travel Permit.) Please remember to duplicate at least 3 copies of Tibet Travel Permit because the permits are required for many occasions. The permit can only be issued in Tibet by the Tibet Tourism Bureau, and also can be only applied by travel agency behalf of travelers. It needs about 15~20 days to obtain the permit.

1. When is the best time to fly to Lhasa?

For Lhasa tour, it is a good choice to travel to this holy city from May to October. During this time, the city of Lhasa is provided with warm sunshine and high oxygen content, good for sightseeing. From April to October, the climate becomes mild and humid and is the best season for travel in Tibet. Meanwhile, there are a great number of Chengdu Lhasa flights operated during this period. It is recommended to take the morning flights, because it will be less likely for you to experience a flight delay or cancel. With five lines respectively leaving from the downtown, railway stations and bus station, the shuttle bus can take tourists of different areas in Chengdu to the airport. Also, you can take Metro Line 10 directly to the Airport Terminal 2 Station, if your hotel is right close to the subway. As the most hassle-free way, tourists can also take a taxi to the airport.

4. Can I fly to other cities in Tibet instead of Lhasa from Chengdu?

Apart from Lhasa, tourists can also take flights to other prefectures in Tibet from Chengdu, including Shigatse and Nyingchi. There is usually one direct flight from Chengdu to Shigatse every day during peak season. But the departure time may alternatively be the early morning or afternoon. It takes about 2 hours to get to Shigatse Peace Airport.

Located in southeast part of Tibet, Nyingchi is the lowest prefecture of Tibet, featuring humid climate and attractive scenery. Currently, Kathmandu is the only one city that operates international flights to Lhasa. Usually, there are two direct flights between Kathmandu and Lhasa every day during the high travel season. To take the flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa, tourists need to obtain the Group Tourist Visa and Tibet Travel Permit.
